You don’t hang the Mona Lisa in a plastic picture frame. You don’t park a beautiful car in the driveway when you have a garage. And most of all, you don’t have a fireplace without shopping for mantels that make it the pièce de résistance of your living room it is meant to be.

Finding the right mantle to match your fireplace takes time. It’s tantamount to painting a room in the way that it fundamentally alters the look and feel of the space. We all know how horrendous it is to paint the walls of a common area only to realize the color looks far different than it did on a plastic strip. Picking the right color and wood are the two most important factors when you start looking for the mantle right for your hearth.

Just like paint samples, shop around at home supply stores and try to bring wood strips home to see how they complement the color of the wall and any brickwork around the fireplace itself. Make sure you are choosing a material that isn’t particularly susceptible to warping since it will be seated next to a hot area. Also, double check if the wood comes pre-stained or unstained, as you will most likely want to have a finish applied for looks and durability.

If you take the time and put forth the effort, this coming winter won’t feel as uninviting with an elegant looking space in your home for being warm and spending time together with your family.
