Are you throwing a party this year for Fat Tuesday? It can be a lot of work, but it’s one of the most fun and rewarding parties the throw. People are naturally more relaxed at a Mardi Gras party, because the spirit of the season is so carefree. You just need the right Mardi Gras party supplies and plan, and people will be talking about it for years. Follow these three simple tips:

1. The theme. A lot of people don’t know the origin and history of Mardi Gras, and more people are just using it as an excuse to throw a kegger. To make your party stand out, go beyond a few masks and invoke some of the traditional imagery of Mardi Gras. Feathers, face paint and a Renaissance feel are a good start. If you want to go all the way, put up some religious imagery like pictures of the saints and votive candles. The mixture of the sacred and profane is part of what makes the holiday so naughty.

2. Extra masks & costumes. You know how it is. The invite says “wear a Mardi Gras mask” but half the people forget. Then the other half feel silly and takes theirs off after they walk in. Be prepared and have some masks or even full costumes ready to loan out.

3. Bead Control. Gentlemen, we all know why you’re stocking up on beads. But don’t make it creepy. If you open the door wearing 100 beaded necklaces and ogling every lady who walks in, it’s too much. Have beads out for people to take and wear a few yourself, and let things happen naturally.
